“Wicked: For Good” came out on November 21, 2025 and is a sequel to “Wicked”, which came out last November. Leading up to the movie, a huge press tour took place that got fans ready for the release and after the release, made $150 million on domestic opening.
The press tour followed the cast around the globe to build up excitement, and of course create new memes for the internet. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who are cast as Glinda and Elphaba were on this press tour, along with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Jeff Goldblum, and SNL star Bowen Yang.
Another huge part of this movie was the legacy that would be left. Wicked started with Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel playing Glinda and Elphaba in the original broadway musical of Wicked. Now, this movie musical adaptation project that was directed by Jon M. Chu has come to an end. The question arising is how will this movie musical hold up compared to the broadway musical, which as of 2025 is currently running.
Moving into the movie itself, “Wicked: For Good” is a 2 hour and 18 minute movie that follows when Elphaba leaves Oz because she realizes the Wizard has no powers, unlike herself, who can cast spells from the Grimmerie. Glinda has become the people’s princess and is known as the Good Witch of the North and the people of Oz look to her. However, she is just the face of the Wizard and Madame Morrible, who are behind the scenes making Oz an exclusive place to live.
Elphaba wants the people to realize the Wizard isn’t a good person but propaganda calls her the Wicked Witch of the West. Fiyero, captain of the Wizard’s guard, is told his sole job is to find Elphaba and kill her, but he loves her and runs away with Elphaba instead.
Elphaba tries to reconcile with the Wizard but he proves to be the man she always thought he was, since he has animals caged in a closet. The story of “The Wizard of Oz” takes place during the movie, and viewers can see Dorothy receiving advice from Glinda to go to the Wizard, and the Wizard and Madame Morrible use Dorothy as a way to kill Elphaba.
Glinda goes to Kiamo Ko, the castle Elphaba lives in and says her last goodbye to Elphaba, as she knows her fate is to have a bucket of water poured on her and “melt.” Glinda then goes back to Oz, where she strives to honor Elphaba’s memory by bringing liberty to those who were once targeted by the Wizard.
I personally loved “Wicked: For Good,” and would recommend the movie to everyone, but they need to watch “Wicked” first to understand the plot line. If you’ve never heard the story, it can be a lot, as there’s multiple plot lines happening at once and even more were added with the movie.
If you are someone who loves Broadway, or is a Wizard of Oz fan and wants to know more behind the Wicked Witch of the West, I would highly recommend “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good.” Just know to bring a blanket and load up on snacks, since you’ll be in the theaters for an afternoon.
“Wicked: For Good” was also produced extremely well, as shown by the way the music and acting brought this imaginative world to life. You can go to the theaters and watch “Wicked: For Good” through this upcoming January.
