“It’s a me, Mario!” is usually said with pride, but after “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” I wouldn’t be proud to say it.
I am an avid Mario fan and have been playing the games since I was little. One wall in my room is just filled with video cartridges and disks. Seeing all of the references on the big screen was definitely very cool, but it does not hide the poor writing, formatting and story.
To add, the movie feels very rushed, and a lot is going on at once. It’s been a common trend recently that kids’ movies are very bright and in-your-face, but most people would prefer a less stimulating movie.
It felt like they were trying to fit too much into one movie. The movie is called “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” yet a good portion references Super Mario Bros 2, Star Fox (not even a Mario franchise), and Yoshi’s Island.
The movie starts out with the introduction of Rosalina, which is one of the best scenes in the movie. It’s cute watching the Lumas look up to their mother. Then, the Mario brothers meet Yoshi, which is also another cute scene. The movie starts to go downhill when there are consistent action scenes, over and over and over again. I love bright colors, but this movie was pushing it.
A lot of the advertising featured Rosalina, implying she would have a larger role, but she is absent from much of the movie. She is used as just a plot device, and of course, she is the one captured by the bad guys!
One of my biggest critiques for both of the Mario movies is that they changed Princess Peach’s character. I’m all about not filling stereotypical gender roles, but having Rosalina be the damsel in distress, instead of Princess Peach, is so out of character for her.
On a positive note, without looking at the movie from a critical standpoint, it’s really nice to see my childhood on screen. Nintendo really tried adding at least one easter egg in every scene. However, if you did not grow up watching the games you will not understand the jokes and easter eggs.
I would give this movie three Power Stars out of five. If you are a big fan of the games, I would definitely recommend it since seeing your favorite characters on screen is surreal. Besides that, unless you are under the age of 10 your eyes might need a break from how chaotic this movie is.
