As the seasons change so too does the atmosphere in the student section. Packed bleachers, students cheering, friends all around and the sun setting behind the trees is what many would think of for a football game on a Friday night. But as the Winter approaches, going to sports is less appealing.
One major reason that attendance drops at winter sports is the weather. Winter sports take place mostly after school which makes it harder for students to be motivated for games after a long school day.
“In the winter I have a lot to do after school and going to a sporting event especially when it’s cold and dark is something that students don’t have time for,” said an anonymous sophomore.
Cold dark nights and early morning are less than favorable conditions for East students to be motivated to go support a team.
The atmosphere between a fall sport and a winter sport has a huge effect on the student sections. Sporting events in the fall and the spring are seen as huge social events: from the marching band on the field at halftime to simply sitting outside under the sun and talking to friends is something one doesn’t get from watching an event indoors in the winter.
Despite winter sports not seeing the same turnout as sports in the fall or spring the smaller student sections continue to display the same amount of passion and support for the team.
Cold weather and busy schedules can deter students from showing up, but the ones who show up and support the teams are crucial in keeping school spirit alive throughout the year.
