East is known for its rich athletic culture, with a multitude of sports-related opportunities. But clearly, for many athletes, being on a sports team is much more than kicking a ball or shooting a shot. It’s an experience, one of friendship, team-building, and understanding. For East students, a jersey is much more than just an article of clothing– it represents their pride and their identity.
For Cole Haddock (‘26), who has been playing sports inside and outside of school, he thinks that being an athlete at East is something that cannot be compared to any outside sport.
“Everyone’s gonna bring different, unique talents to the team. Seeing how they come together and make one team and then eventually go on to win, that’s, I think, what makes it special for East,” said Haddock.
Haddock’s love for sports goes back to his brothers, who were also part of East athletics. Haddock has always participated in sports growing up, playing sports for East was just another milestone. He also has a competitive, team-supporting spirit.
“I’ve had two brothers before me who came through and played sports. I’ve always played sports as I’ve grown up. I played basketball, soccer and baseball growing up since I was very young. So I knew sports were my thing. I’m a competitor, so I love winning,” said Haddock.
Not only does team culture and bond-building play a role in what makes East sports like no other, but so do the coaches. Coaches invest their hopes and encouragement in their players, and in return, the players want at the very least to return that energy and appreciation to their coach.
“I would die in a fire with Coach Drob, go into battle with him. I love that dude. He pumps me up. [Coaches] are always with you, and they always believe in you, so I just wanna give back to them by winning and doing my best,” said Haddock.
Tyler Whitney (‘27) is another student who feels the undeniable exceptionality of East sports. As a student who has been playing golf since his freshman year, he thinks the team atmosphere is what ultimately makes East sports special.
“The people on the team are what make it special, they’re a special group of guys, including the coach, and I wouldn’t wanna play for any other high school. We’re a really good golfing school, and during my freshman year, we were so much better than other teams, and we won, and winning is a good feeling,” said Whitney.
“It’s the people who bring out the best of me, make me laugh, make me have fun and make me play better,” said Whitney.
East’s athletic culture, while competitive and demanding, is ultimately rewarding at the end of the day. Whether you find it rewarding through the supportive coaches or eccentric team members, the East’s athletic department is more than just a jersey. It’s an experience, one with ups and downs, but throughout the way, the pride and support of the team will always have your back, and that’s what makes East athletic culture unique.
