Ten years ago, Kristina Decker (’26) was learning the fundamentals of the sport she would come to love. At the time, Decker was acquiring techniques on how to hit a softball and, subsequently, run what felt a lengthy distance to first base. On Aug. 13, 2025, Decker took the last steps to home base, committing to play collegiate softball at William Paterson University.
When it came to choosing a college, Decker took into consideration the size of the school, the distance from home, and the softball program itself. Choosing William Paterson was a no brainer. “From the moment I visited campus, I loved the atmosphere and the [large] size,” Decker says.
At the age of twelve, Decker knew she wanted to play softball at the next level. With that, she dedicated every day, year round, to her softball training and development. As a result, the work hasn’t gone unnoticed.
After earning a varsity spot freshman year, Decker never looked back. Overall, in her career, she has maintained a .304 batting average, with 52 hits; 16 doubles and 4 triples total. Decker’s consistency and her statistics make it evident that she has no problem getting on base, with 38% of her hits going for extra bases. Although all make for an impressive statline, Decker isn’t finished. With one more high school season not yet in the books, Decker hopes to exit with a bang and intends to keep up her hard work.
As a high-class athlete, one word differentiates Decker from the ordinary player: versatility. For Cherry Hill High School East, she plays in the third base position, but for her club team, NJ Stars FastPitch, she typically pitches and plays in the infield. Decker showcases she can contribute and adapt to any softball program and, in this case, make for a strong addition to William Paterson’s roster.
Additionally, Decker is a leader, who any teammate can seek out for a shoulder to lean on. East softball teammate, Natalie Olson (28’), says “ [Decker] is a good leader who helps out a lot. She helped me navigate softball when I was a freshman.” Like a shortstop, Decker is quick to jump on any issue; consistently offering advice and being an active listener to teammates.
As her high school career enters its final chapter, Decker reflects on the vast impact the sport has made on her life, “[softball teaches] me lessons I know I will carry with me as I continue to grow both on and off the field.”
