Fantasy football has grown in popularity in recent years among high school and college students. The thrill of drafting players and competing each week draws people in. Most leagues add a punishment for the person who finishes in last place, and some people worry that these punishments have gone too far; however, many students see them as harmless and an entertaining way to add edge to their league.
Punishments are meant to be funny and to keep players checking their lineups every week. A common punishment among the younger population includes 14 days of posting funny TikTok videos. While it can be a little embarrassing, it’s all for fun and doesn’t put anyone in danger. These challenges encourage creativity and make the league more entertaining, and give everyone something to laugh about together. Turning a loss into a memorable experience rather than just a disappointment.
Some leagues take it a step further and have their punishments include physical challenges, like the “milk mile,” where the loser drinks a gallon of milk and runs in intervals. While uncomfortable, many students say fun comes from experiencing it together.
“Our league did the milk mile, and it was pretty disgusting, but it wasn’t actually dangerous. We made sure they were okay and laughed the whole time,” said Grayden Kratchmen (‘29).
Ryan Jiang (‘29) added, “The whole point is to keep people invested throughout the season. Without a punishment, half the league stops checking their team by week 5.”
Most students agree that as long as everyone agrees to the punishment beforehand, it’s fair.
Max Cossrow (29’) said, “We pick a punishment that works for everybody. If someone isn’t comfortable, we change it. It’s supposed to be fun, not harmful.”
This shows that leagues communicate to make sure the punishments are consensual and do not cross the lines of harassment.
In the end, fantasy football punishments have not gone too far. They’re usually safe, funny, and create lifelong memories. When everyone agrees, and no one is at risk, punishments remain a fun tradition that makes fantasy football even more exciting.
