With the winter season approaching, each team is preparing for another competitive season. From basketball to wrestling to swimming, Cougar athletes are ready to start back up again.
The boys’ basketball team will tip off their season on December 15th at 4:00 p.m., hosting Kings Christian. The Cougars enter the year with high expectations after finishing 26–4 and winning the conference last season. Senior forward Chris Delgado (‘26) is also approaching a major milestone, needing just 139 points to reach 1,000 career points.
“Being able to hit a milestone like that will be really awesome, but it’s important that we focus on winning,” said Delgado.
The girls’ basketball team will open its season on Tuesday, December 16th, with a 7:00 p.m. road game against Paul VI. After graduating standout Darby Chharbia, the team will look to her cousin, junior guard Dylan Kratchman (‘27), to lead the way. Helping lead the way will be sophomore guard Maya Morgan (‘28) after a very impressive freshman season.
In the pool, the Cougars are off to a strong start, with both teams opening the season 2-0. They earned dominant wins over Cherokee and Eastern. Expectations are high this year, with the girls coming off a Group A championship and the boys entering the season as defending conference champions.
“I’m excited for the season to start back up again. We fell short [of] what we expected last year and have our goals set out to try and win everything this year,” said sophomore swimmer Luke Davis (‘28).
The ice hockey team has also gotten its season underway, starting hot with a 5-2-1 record. The team has been led by senior David Mogell (‘26) and junior Hunter Mason (‘27), who both have 8 points on the year so far.
“I’m really excited for my senior season. We’ve gotten off to a good start, and hopefully we can keep it up and win a championship,” said Mogell.
The Wrestling team has its first match this Saturday, December 13th, against Haddonfield Memorial. The team looks to improve after a disappointing season last year going 9-19.
“I think we will have lots of improvement this season. We have a lot of returning players who made big jumps since last year, and I think that’s gonna help us out a lot,” said sophomore wrestler Matan Cohen (‘28).
The bowling team has been back in action, with both squads already underway this season. The girls’ team has had a tough start, opening at 0-3-1, while the boys are off to a strong 3-0-1 beginning. The girls’ next match will take place after winter break against Lenape (2-1). The boys have one more match before the break, facing Overbrook (0-2) on December 22nd.
Winter track will look to get its season started right before break, with its first meet being on December 20th. The meet will take place in Philadelphia to host the SJTCA #4.
