On Tuesday, January 20, the Cherry Hill East girls varsity basketball team (5-8) took down North Burlington (3-10) in an epic match. The Cougars were able to come away with the win 60-33 in front of their home crowd.
The Cougars were led by guard Maya Morgan (‘28), who nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with a career-high 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals, and four assists in the win. Guard Dylan Kratchman (‘27) also played a key role, contributing 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars got off to a hot start, opening the game on a 10-0 run, with Morgan and Kratchman each scoring four points. After a dominant first quarter, the Cougars held a dominating 23-7 lead.
With strong defense to open the quarter, the Cougars extended their lead to 29–7 after guard Jessie Atlas (‘27) came up with a steal and took it coast-to-coast for a layup.
After a last second three-pointer from Kratchman the Cougars had a 37-14 going into the half.
The Cougars were able to keep the game steady in the third quarter finishing it with a 56-23 lead, with scoring coming from all five starters.
After a big block to start the final period from Michelle Le (‘26), that led to a big shot from Morgan, that would be the dagger for the Cougars 60-33 win.
This was a big win for the Cougars making it their first time this season winning back to back games and a big push of motivation for the team’s season and playoff hopes.
“Going into the heart of our season, it is important we continue doing what we are doing and what our coaches emphasize, which is getting 1% better everyday and putting our best effort forward,” said Morgan. “Also, I think as a team, we have been playing strong team basketball and earning the shots we want. In the second half of the season, we just need to keep doing what we are doing: developing, keeping our team morale high, and playing hard.”
