One of the biggest rivalries in the South Jersey region are the Cherry Hill East Cougars and the Eastern Vikings. Fans were eager to see if the undefeated Cougars could fulfill their spotless record.
On January 29, East entered the game with a flawless 15-0 record, however, this game was the first of the absence of their leading player, Jamieson Young (‘28). The team’s true strength and effort was tested, but East remained confident, looking to stride at Eastern’s home court and sustain their victory 56-35 over the Vikings earlier in the season.
Christopher Abreu (‘27), was a standout from the start, showcasing his agility and shooting powers. Abreu’s leadership on the court pushed the Cougars, who played with dominance knowing the importance of the game in shaping their season.
The game was led by East, with Abreu scoring 27 points overall. Eastern’s guards worked hard to contain Cherry Hill East’s offensive threats, but nothing could defeat Abreu’s shot record. Despite the Vikings playing at home, they could not reach enough points to bring them the lead, not even by halftime. By the end of the game the Vikings ended with five fouls while Cougars ended with one.
Ultimately, Cherry Hill East Cougars secured a hard-fought victory, 72-58, sustaining East’s winning streak. Eastern with hard-work attempted to redeem themselves from their previous rivalry game, but fell short.
