On Saturday, September 27, the Cherry Hill High School East boys’ soccer team defeated Cherry Hill High School West in a classic rivalry game, 1-0. The game was played under the lights at Cougar Stadium, where the rain glistened throughout the night.
The East vs. West matchup has long been one of the most intense rivalries in South Jersey sports; drawing students, alumni, and families to the game year after year. For East, Saturday’s win not only secured bragging rights but also added another memorable chapter to the cross-town rivalry.
Despite the downfall of rain, the stands were packed with umbrellas and ponchos. The Cougars student section shows up strong for the “Blackout” theme, bringing energy and loud support as soon as the game started.
Halfway through the first half, midfielder Ben Boucher (‘28), was able to find center back Felipe Kanacri (‘27) for the early goal. The Cougar student section erupted after the goal, leaving the team with an unforgettable memory.
“It felt unreal to contribute to the win. Growing up, it was always a dream of mine to play in the East vs. West game—and not only to play, but to get the assist made the moment even more incredible,” said Boucher.
“Scoring the only goal in a rivalry game like this means a lot to me. And it’s a moment I’ll never forget achieving with the boys,” said Kanacri.
This long lasting rivalry has left some nostalgia for the older players.
“Beating West and coming back my senior year has been very surreal, the team has been working very hard and greater things are to come,” said midfielder Joseph Kwak (‘26).
The victory keeps East undefeated at 7-0-1 and strengthens their push toward the conference title. Ranked 14th in the state heading into the matchup, the Cougars are proving themselves as serious contenders heading into October.
