Sophia Santo bakes her way to El Salvador

Generally, when hearing the last name “Santo,” East students may first think of Chris (’11), the basketball player, or Tom (’11), the Justin Bieber look-a-like. But, among the student body is another Santo with a great talent that most are unaware of: Sophia (’13), a skilled baker with great potential.

Over the past few months, Santo has been baking to raise enough money to travel to El Salvador on a missions trip this upcoming summer. Her father gave her this idea when he paired her desire to go on the trip with her passion for baking sweet treats.

“I was determined to raised the money so I started to do that,” she said. “The word has really spread around.”

Santo has been selling cupcakes, sfinci, dirt, sugar cookies and cinnamon buns to fundraise, and all proceeds have been going directly to the trip. The extra money and donations she collects she hopes to contribute towards other mission associations.

Santo typically spends two to three hours each week making these delicious baked goods that she sells to people that work with her dad, her friends and others in the community.

With a very supportive family, Santo hopes to continue baking and selling to raise money beyond this summer’s endeavor.

“It’s definitely something I want to continue doing,” she said.
