Snow days are rare here in Cherry Hill, as we rarely ever get a significant snowfall, but this January, we received 9 inches of snow. That amount of snow can make anyone feel nostalgic. Students at Cherry Hill High School East all have different ways of celebrating their occasional snow days.
Some students love to cozy up and play video games with their long-distance friends, taking the time to relax and communicate with friends.
“What makes my snow day super special is, depending on how the snow is falling, I either stay inside or go outside. When I stay inside, I play video games with my friends. And having a snow day is always fun, because one of my friends who moved to a different country recently, it’s one of the times that I actually get to play with her on Roblox,” said Sofia Krasnokutsky (‘29).
Other students like to contribute to the community by cleaning the driveway for the elderly for free, and doing so with family and friends makes it all the more special.
“Obviously, my favorite snow day tradition is a tradition to start shoveling with [my] family. I make sure to go to nice old grandmas’ houses, and just make sure to shovel for free,” said James Beaney (‘28).

Other students revel in the mere sight of snow, the reward of extra sleep, and a stress-free day, as well as recreating memorable childhood memories.
“The fact that there’s snow on the ground, because first of all, we can sleep in. We don’t have to worry about school. We can go around making money, and that’s what makes it different from every other day…As a child, I would go make snowmen in my yard, and I still do that today. So that’s a tradition I have never let go of,” said Tyler Whitney (‘27).
Some students love to make a dish reminiscent of wintertime, and cozy up with family and watch holiday movies, because in weather like this, we all can’t help but think of the holidays.
“My mom likes to make this certain dish. It’s a zucchini fritter, and I love them. She always makes them on snow days, and piggies in a blanket … And we always watch holiday movies, because it’s wintertime. I mean, the holidays are over now, but they’re still fun to do now,” said Brad Hendricks (‘26).
As the snow starts to gloss over and turn icy, we all take a moment to appreciate the many memories and traditions that the rare sight of snow can bring us. Whether it be cozying up with family and friends, watching movies, creating special dishes, or merely just catching some more sleep, every East student has their own unique way of relishing the snow day before it melts away.
