Cherry Hill High School East’s 21 culture clubs showcased their booths and performances at this year’s Multicultural Day (MCD) on Thursday, March 26 – the culmination of a year’s worth of preparation. Revolving around the theme “Echoes of the Past: Golden Ages and Origins,” the Korean Culture Club, Hispanic Heritage Club, Vietnamese Culture Club, Chinese Students Association, Filipino Cultural Society, African American Culture Club and Indian Cultural Society presented multi-act dance performances to the freshman, senior, sophomore and junior classes beginning at 7:40 a.m., 9:05 a.m., 11:35 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively in the East auditorium. Concurrently, student-run booths with food, music and activities from each culture club were set up in the DiBart and East gyms.
“Whenever you get a chance to celebrate the rich diversity that lives somewhere, in a school or in a community, you should always do that,” Acting Principal Dr. Neil Burti told Eastside.
Performances involved both traditional and modern dance mediums to bring to life this year’s “Golden Ages and Origins” theme. From Filipino tinikling, African stepping and Korean buchaechum to Bruno Mars vocal performances, dances to both Kendrick Lamar and modern K-pop respectively, clubs demonstrated how their cultures have evolved over time. Preceding MCD, culture clubs also presented their performances to the East community at large during Parent Night on Wednesday, March 25 from 7 to 9 p.m in the East auditorium. Parents, East alumni and community members alike were welcome to watch.
“I think [MCD] benefits everyone because it recognizes our differences, but also brings everyone together… so that we aren’t afraid to express who we are, knowing that it will be celebrated by people who might have different backgrounds from us. I think that’s really important in society in general, so it’s important for the kids here at East to be able to express themselves as well,” a Parent Night audience member said.
All MCD performance videos are available on the Eastside Online Youtube channel. Eastside will provide additional MCD content promptly.
