McMillan’s Bakery plans to revive aspects of its previous menu after Del Buono’s Bakery owner Tom Whitman purchased the building, with business expected to resume in February 2026. Whitman is set to partner with Doug Biemiller, the grandson of the original three-generation bakery family, in pursuit of spreading flavors and memories to future generations.
Located in Haddon Township, McMillan’s was once a local staple that prided itself on authentic, homemade baked goods. After 86 years of business, the family decided to sell the property this past May.
Whitman, having grown up in Mount Ephraim, felt a connection to the traditions of Haddon Heights. The original owners did not initially want the business to continue to operate as a bakery, so it was sold to Grake Construction, from which Whitman later purchased the building and its equipment.
After connecting with Biemiller through a mutual friend, Whitman began to draft a plan that would allow efficient business while also preserving the delicacies and atmosphere of the previous establishment. Biemiller, who has 30 years of experience as a head baker at McMillan’s, is set to return and take charge of bakery operations, while Whitman will handle the business-oriented aspects.
McMillan’s Bakery was founded in 1939 by George and Evelyn McMillan, and quickly expanded into a local favorite. Across the years, customers flooded the building to purchase intricately decorated cakes and buttery cookies galore. Among their most renowned desserts is the signature cream donut. This decadent fried dough filled with freshly whipped cream gained immense popularity, attracting customers nearly every day of the year.
With a member of the McMillan family working to preserve authenticity, customers can expect returning items, including original recipes for the fan-favorite cream-filled donuts and other iconic pastries.
In the months preceding the anticipated reopening, the building will undergo a set of renovations. Simultaneously, Whitman will be hard at work planning for business operations, for which his previous undertakings of local small businesses have prepared him.
In the past, he has purchased Del Buono’s Bakery and Carmen’s Deli, allowing the business to thrive and motivating him to continue in pursuit of a new opportunity at McMillin’s. Del Buono’s is a Haddon Heights bakery and deli that holds strong similarities to McMillin’s in its deep-rooted history, with the business first opening in 1923. Whitman purchased the family-run business in 2013 and now aims to expand his enterprise to McMillin’s.
In the end, the significance of McMillin’s revival lies not just in the food itself but in the legacy that the bakery has left behind. Despite its humble beginnings as a mere dream in 1939, McMillin’s Bakery has evolved into a longstanding establishment that, regardless of its original closure, has inspired future generations of family and community members alike to relish in the laughter and memories of authentic delights.
