On February 13th, 15th, 20th, and 22nd, Croft Farms held their annual “I Heart Art” youth art show. Cherry Hill students, grades K-8, entered an art piece of their choice to display their talent. The Arts Center was set up similarly to a museum to showcase the work of the young, creative minds of the town. 81 unique pieces were entered into the show as students had complete creative freedom as to what they wanted to design.

Not only did individual students participate, but Girl Scout troops as well. The art they made as a group helped diversify the showcase, as communities within Cherry Hill were represented, rather than just individuals.

Each student who participated gave their work a title and listed their “mediums” or materials used to construct their submission. This collection of names, mediums, grades, and titles were organized into a packet which was handed out to attendees. Each show was between the hours of 4-7 and was open for visitors to come and go as they pleased. It was a quiet and respectful scene where all those who attended were truly interested in observing the artwork. Some guests even came without children because they were so interested in seeing the talent of the youth and supporting aspiring artists.

Every student who submits an entry for this event must pay a five-dollar fee. All of the money collected from the show is put together and given as a scholarship to two students, one from Cherry Hill East and one from Cherry Hill West, who are interested in the arts, music, or theatre programs. Occasionally, the board will even buy an art piece from a student to display in the Cherry Hill Municipal Building.

At the show, there were tons of excited students inviting their family and friends to show off their work. So many children with bright smiles and pride on their faces showed what Cherry Hill is about and brought the community together. Since this is not a competitive showcase and there is no true “winner,” it instills confidence in the children at a young age. Students are given a sense of voice through this opportunity, and are encouraged to follow whatever their dreams or passions may be.

Clearly, this art show is much deeper than a few paintings hung on the wall. For young Cherry Hill students, it is freedom and an opportunity to express themselves.
