Bestwork Industries for the Blind is a non-profit organization in Cherry Hill that grants opportunities to the blind and low vision individuals that allow them to join a workforce and create a future for themselves. This organization is dedicated to training these people and helping them to become involved in a supportive work environment.
Bestwork was founded in 1981 by Jim Varsaci, a war veteran who came home blinded from combat during World War II. While physically blinded, Varasaci returned with a new vision to create opportunities for others like him. Although Bestwork started as a small, self-sustaining agency, it has now grown into a full–service social enterprise.
In order to create a productive and inclusive environment, Bestwork implemented tools such as tactile guides—which assist employees with canes—on floors, adaptive technology that includes different screens tailored to each employee’s level of sight, and overall personal assistance. While these changes may seem like small adaptations, they ensure safety and inclusivity for all.
Director of Communications and Marketing Lauren Scarpa said, “We focus on what people can do, and when you change that mindset, the possibilities are endless.”
Scarpa explains that she wishes more people understood “that ability, not disability, is what defines a person’s potential.” Bestwork focuses more on people’s abilities and what they can do rather than what they cannot.
“They are not defined by their vision loss. They are defined by their talent [and] work ethic,” said Scarpa.

A powerful example of the agency’s impact is through the journey of Alfonso Harrell. Harrell began working at Bestwork as a sewing machine operator. Even with his visual disabilities, he continued to work hard and show dedication to his job. Harrell’s potential was soon recognized by Bestwork, and he now works at Team Lead in the agency’s satellite office. His journey from an operator to a leader proves Bestwork’s ability to nurture professional growth.
“It shows that we don’t just offer jobs; we build careers,” said Scarpa.
Furthermore, the agency’s mission is supported by the public and continues to look for more support. Bestwork partners with local businesses to try and create more job opportunities. They are also always open to donations.
“Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us provide the [tools] that [empower] our employees to succeed,” said Scarpa.
Scarpa said, “We believe that the biggest barriers are not a lack of sight, but a lack of accessibility.” Bestwork not only provides job accessibility for the visually impaired but also provides access to vision services and resources to people who are newly blind or need help adjusting.
Ultimately, Bestwork Industries for the Blind works to ensure that every person is given the chances that they deserve. The organization continues to create pathways and hopes to open even more doors for people in the future.
