Cherry Hill High School East’s National English Honors Society continues to make a positive impact on the community by hosting outreach events at several elementary schools this month. During their outreach events, members of the honors society leave school early to read to young students. So far, members have visited James H. Johnson, Thomas Paine, A. Russel Knight, Joseph D. Sharp, Richard Stockton, and Clara Barton elementary schools.

Once the high schoolers arrive at the elementary school, they split among different classrooms in the school. They are then divided and paired with small groups within these classrooms. The students receive books suitable for their class’ reading level. Once they have read their books and answered questions, the students move on to the next classroom, where they continue reading. Thus far, the high schoolers have been met with excitement as they enter each classroom.

“The children have been so excited to have the high schoolers come in and read. We are thrilled to be connecting elementary and high school students together. The best part of the readings is the way their faces light up when the high school students come into the room and they run up to us in excitement,” said Crystal Yeh, Vice President of National English Honors Society.

This program serves as a great opportunity for high schoolers to connect with younger students and promote the importance of reading. By fostering and sharing their love for the subject, the National English Honors Society is providing an atmosphere to promote literacy skills and passion for Cherry Hill’s future generations.
