The majority of Cherry Hill High School East knows about the successful season the boys basketball team is having (24-3) and the girls swim team, who just won the state championship (12-2). But, what about East’s boys bowling team (8-6-1)? While the bowlers of our school may not get recognition like athletes who play more mainstream sports; they are talented, diligent, and have a winning record. Sam Neuwirth (‘26), one of the captains, exhibits the merit of a true athlete; one who performs well individually and helps others to do the same. Neuwirth has been selected for the Athlete Spotlight for Boys Bowling for the month of February.
Being an elite bowler requires a high level of technical skill. To achieve a top score, you have to concentrate on each pin. Whether it’s the way you move your arm, or your release of the ball, each swing has to be executed precisely each time. Neuwirth has averaged a score of 185.13 in each match this year. In one game, Neuwirth had a 659 series, with a standout game of 236. He is ambitious and hopes to continue improving his scores.
“[My goal is] to increase my average by about 15 points,” Neuwirth said.
Top scores are great, but being a leader is what makes an athlete exceptional. As captain, Neuwirth makes it apparent to his teammates that he is a shoulder for them to lean on. He is the engine of the train for East bowling and welcomes open communication, encouraging his peers to reach their full potential. Under no circumstance will Neuwirth put anything before his team.
“[Neuwirth’s leadership] fosters a supportive and cohesive team environment, where each member feels valued and motivated to contribute their best,” said Mr. Ryan James, head bowling coach.
Being mentally tough is a trait many athletes struggle with. After making a mistake they may throw their arms up, or let one error ruin the rest of their game. However, Neuwirth does not let mental lapses like these get to him.
“[Neuwirth] always tries to stay positive, he always comes through when we need it most,” said Nolan Perry (26’), one of his teammates.
In any sport, when tryouts come around, it is evident who put in the work during the off season. This shone through for Neuwirth as he increased his average score by 50.7 points over last season’s average.
“Sam dedicated a significant amount of time this past off-season to enhance his skills and he can be regarded as the most improved player from last year’s team,” said Coach James.
Neuwirth has 7,405 pins on the season, one of the highest totals on East’s bowling team. As the season wraps up, he continues to dominate in the points column.
Although he wishes he started bowling at a younger age, Neuwirth recognizes that the first and hardest step is starting, but once you do, you don’t want to go back. Neuwirth rallies young athletes interested in bowling to just do it.
