Cherry Hill East Girls Swim team captain, Megan Treglia (‘25), has committed to Tufts University for swimming.
Treglia began swimming when she was 5 years old, starting her career at the Woodcrest Swim Club. She now swims year round for her club team, Jersey Wahoos, along with Cherry Hill East Girls Swim (CHEGS) in the winter, as well as Woodcrest Swim Club in the summer. On Sunday, Feb. 23, CHEGS won the Group 4 New Jersey State Championships against Montclair High School, scoring 85.5 points.
Treglia is very diverse in her swimming events on both the CHEGS and Woodcrest teams, describing how she “pretty much swims anything”. Her best events are the 200 fly, 400 IM, and the 500 freestyle. The main reason Treglia wanted to continue her swim career in college is because she can’t imagine her life without swimming.
“Even though I know I’m going to be busy with homework since I’m on a pre-med track, I’ve dedicated over a decade of my life to swimming year-round on a competitive level. I’m not ready to give that up yet,” she said.
Treglia had many inspirations throughout her swim career, but she attributes her brother as being her biggest role model.
“My brother, who graduated in 2020, loved swimming for the East Boys Swim Team. He committed to Rider University for the sport, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. He was the person who got me swimming in the first place. He is always so supportive and is someone I look up to,” said Treglia.
To give back to the CHEGS team, Treglia makes every effort to be an inspiration to the other girls.
“I love being a role model for the underclassmen. CHEGS is such a supportive community and I love being a person that can help motivate and comfort others when they’re not feeling their best,” she said.
Treglia describes how she wanted to commit to a school that challenges her both athletically and academically.
“Even though Tufts is D3, they’re competitive for their division. The team also had such amazing connections and friendships, and I really liked the community and the coaches’ mentality. After talking with the coaches, meeting the team, and shadowing a class, I knew that I would love to dedicate the next four years to Tufts,” she said.
The decision to swim at Tufts University was not easy, as Treglia had interest from many other schools such as NYU, Emory, Boston University, Johns Hopkins, Colgate, and Fordham.
Treglia’s best memories include winning the State championships her sophomore and senior year. At the championship meet on Sunday, Treglia placed first in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
The whole team was just so excited and so positive. These are moments I will never forget,” she said.
CHEGS has made a lasting impact on Treglia’s life, truly building her love of the sport.
“CHEGS is like a second family to me. I love the way that we all support each other no matter how fast we’re swimming. At Wahoos, swimming at meets is more of an individual sport. But at East, you have to trust yourself and your teammates to win,” she said.
She looks forward to making new friends and finding her place in college, both on the swim team and in school clubs.
