By dedicating your time and effort into a sport that you truly love, you will see the payoff. Brett Schuster (‘22) has been playing tennis since first grade and has recently committed to TCNJ to continue his education, majoring in business, and pursuing tennis at the collegiate level.
“The ability to be able to continue playing tennis in college was something that I really wanted to do.” said Schuster, “[TCNJ’s tennis team] is a well-achieved team, so I feel like it was a great place for me.”
Schuster describes the great feeling of happiness that he feels when he is on the court with his racket in hand and in position to start his match.
“The team atmosphere is really great. We’re looking to win the Group 4 State Championships this,” said Schuster.
Schuster is a big goal setter when it comes to his sport. Going into his freshman year, Schuster wanted to be able to play first singles. This past year, he was able to achieve that goal. He believes that his hard work and dedication is what allowed him to achieve the goals he set for himself. This year, he hopes to play first singles again.
“I worked extremely hard during the summer and off-season to achieve that goal,” said Schuster.
Schuster received many different offers from schools to play for their college. Amongst the offers was Fairleigh Dickinson University. Coaches would watch him play at his tournaments or state championships. Schuster would keep in contact with coaches and reach out to them through email throughout the whole recruitment process. When it came down to looking at his options, Schuster chose the school that had the best opportunities academically and had a team with which he felt like he could thrive with.
“For people who are getting into tennis, you have to put the work in during the off-season so when you come out to compete during the spring, you’re ready to play,” said Schuster
As his senior year is coming to an end, his new journey at TCNJ is just beginning. Brett will always be an East cougar at heart and we wish him the best of luck next fall of 2022!
