Girls varsity soccer between East and West has been back and forth for the last 10 years, with West winning 5, East winning 4, and 4 ties. This game always brings out a large crowd and student sections. This year was no different.
“It’s always a super fun and super competitive atmosphere. Both teams always play to their full potential so I am looking forward to an awesome game,” said Coach Rachel Steelman-Tonon, the East girls’ coach.
East senior defender, Darby Chhabria (‘25) started the game off with the first goal, assisted by junior midfielder, Julia Maher (‘26). West quickly hit back with a goal from senior center back, Rayna Robertson (‘25).
Going into the second half, tied, fans were unsure what the outcome would be, keeping them on the edge of their seats.
In the final minutes, West freshman, Joelle Mateo (‘28), was able to put one past East to take a last minute lead. Mateo was assisted by senior, Julia Lewis (‘25).
“Getting a corner in the closing minutes of a historical rivalry was huge. Julia’s corner kick was perfectly placed and I was able to get a head on it to secure the win for my team. Both teams worked really hard, but the ball stays on the West side,” said Mateo.
East sophomore, Jessie Atlas, played a hard fought game for the Cougars giving it her all until the final whistle.
“I believe our team has been working really hard and that each player on the field gave one hundred percent [effort]. Unfortunately, the game didn’t go our way. Looking ahead, we have to communicate and play together as a team and use this setback to push us even harder to succeed and finish the season strong,” said Atlas.
