Dan Melleby (’11) hits a three with ten seconds left to defeat Pennsauken 66-64

East varsity boy’s basketball team defeated Pennsauken today 66-64.Chris Santo (’11) led East with 34 points and Dan Melleby (’11) added 10 points of his own, including the game winning three point shot with 10 seconds left in the game.

Santo gave the Cougars a late fourth quarter lead when he stole the ball and finished with a reverse lay up with 49 seconds left to put the team up 63-62.

However, Pennsauken quickly tied the game by picking apart the East defense and finding an open man near the hoop for an easy 2 points.

An offensive foul with 36 seconds gave the visiting team a chance to add to their lead, but the ensuing inbounds pass was stolen and after running the motions of the offense, Melleby was left open for a three in the corner with 10 seconds left that hit nothing but net.

After a timeout and down by 2, the visiting team moved up the court with under 10 seconds left hoping to send the game into overtime. However, the Cougar Countrymen, notorious for heckling opponents, began to count down the final seconds with still plenty of time left on the clock. Pennsauken, believing that the game was within a second of ending, shot desperation three that sailed wide of the hoop.

An East rebound with 2 seconds left on the clock ended the game in dramatic fashion.
