Yesterday, the Varsity Girls tennis team defeated Bridgewater-Raritan in the semi-finals of the State Tournament. East came into the match regarded as a major underdog, while Bridgewater-Raritan was ranked number one in the tournament. East pulled off a major upset winning 3-2.
Joy Hu (’09) lost at first singles 6-2, 6-0 to Lisa Chi. At second singles, Dyuti Das (’09) defeated Helen Sdvizhkov, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). Promising freshmen, Jamie Silverberg won at third singles and defeated Jennifer Tai, 6-1, 6-2. Sarah Vallet (’10) and Christina Bell (’09) of first doubles lost to Caroline Davis and Julianne Davis, 6-0, 6-1. Lastly, Jami Goldschneider (’09) and Lauren Cohen (’09) of second doubles won, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, against Sarah Capoferri and Neha Ghosh.
The win against Bridgewater-Raritan put East into the State Finals. The magical season was put to an end, when the Cougars lost to East Brunswick 2-3 in the finals. With only one returning freshman, East will look to pull off another remarkable season.
