Every good thing starts with a dream. The new movie, Wonka, presents the origin story of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and it uncovers his life before he became the successful businessman we have seen in previous films. In the new 2023 musical, Timothée Chalamet stars as Willy Wonka. Other notable actors/actresses include Hugh Grant as the Oompa Loompa and Rowan Atkinson as the priest. This fun, beautiful adventure of a movie shows Willy Wonka armed with nothing but a hatful of dreams trying to change the world with his chocolate creation. This spectacular, imaginative movie recently hit theaters on December 15th.
The ambitious Willy Wonka is seen sailing off at the beginning of the film to start sharing his creation with the Galeries Gourmet in a European city. However, there are three chocolate makers already in the area who are not interested in what Willy Wonka has to offer. They even try to get him arrested for selling his chocolates outside of their shops. With little money, he finds it difficult to find a place to sleep until a stranger approaches him and offers a place to stay. Without reading the contract put into place by Mrs. Scrubbit (Olivia Colman), Willy Wonka finds himself stuck in the laundromat in the basement due to his rent being one day late. The young girl, Noodle (Calah Lane), tries to warn Willy Wonka about signing the contract, but since he has not learned how to read, he skips past it. Once he makes it to the basement, he discovers all of the people who also did not read the contract and are forced to work off the debt that they owe. Determined to sell his chocolates, Willy Wonka and Noodle create a plan to distract Mrs. Scrubbit and Bleacher so he can make it out to earn more money to open his chocolate shop. However, Willy Wonka encounters many setbacks that prevent him from becoming the greatest chocolate maker.
Later, it is revealed that Willy Wonka stole cocoa beans from the Oompa Loompas territory during the interaction he has with the Oompa Loompa named Lofty (Hugh Grant). Lofty has been following Willy Wonka throughout his travels and has been stealing chocolate in his sleep. One night, Willy Wonka creates a trap for him and discovers who this orange man is. Ultimately, Lofty helps rescue Noodle and Willy Wonka when they are drowning in chocolate. The movie ends with Willy Wonka successfully opening up his factory full of chocolate galore.
Wonka is the perfect movie to see this winter. Wonka manages to create new, illuminating factors but also keeps it classic to the traditional 1971 and 2005 films. This magical, energetic musical shows how far a dream can take you. As seen with Willy Wonka, he was driven by the encouragement of his mother to open up what would be known as his chocolate factory and he manages to change the world with his chocolates. Ronald Dahl published Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1964 with no intention of the movie becoming a prodigy. With two movie adaptations already, fans are falling in love with this plot. In Wonka, fans can experience Willy Wonka’s past before he becomes the greatest chocolate maker anyone has ever seen.
