The Recording Academy releases Grammy nominations
The Grammys, the awards presented by the Recording Academy to recognize outstanding music achievement, return this year with its officially announced nominations for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for 2023. The Grammys have become the most sought-after award in the music industry with the “Big Four” awards being some of the most prestigious awards in the music industry. 2022 has seen a lot of new and popular music spanning a new tradition of popularity through social media, specifically TikTok. Earlier this year, the Recording Academy even announced new categories such as Songwriter of the Year and Best Song for Social Change in light of new movements taking place across the United States. The nominees this year do not just span-new artists but also include older favorites with new tastes for a rising pop culture in the United States.
The most prized Grammy Awards, known as the “Big Four,” are the awards for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.
For the 65th annual Grammys Awards the nominees for Best New Artist are Anitta, a Brazilian singer known for songs like “Show das Poderosas” and “Evolver,” which topped the Spotify charts; Omar Apollo, known for songs like “Ugotme;” DOMi & JD BECK, a duo whom rose to prominence through Instagram and are known for songs like “Take a Chance on Me;” Muni Long, a songwriter who gained fame from YouTube and her release of the song “Hrs and Hrs;” Samara Joy, an up-and-coming jazz singer; Latto, a rising rapper famous for MTV Music Video winner, “Big Energy;” Måneskin, an Italian rock band who won 2021 Eurovision Contest and is famous for songs like “Beggin;” Tobe Nwigwe, a famous rapper who rose to prominence through social media; Molly Tuttle, an up-and-coming bluegrass vocalist, and songwriter; and Wet Leg, a British indie rock band whose debut single “Chaise Longue” was an instant hit.
The nominees for Album of the Year include Voyage, the ninth and final studio album by the Swedish pop group, ABBA; 30 by singer-songwriter Adele; Un Verano Sin Ti by Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny; RENAISSANCE by singer-songwriter Beyonce; Good Morning Gorgeous by singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige; In These Silent Days by singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile; Music of the Spheres by rock band Coldplay; Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers by singer-songwriter Kendrick Lamar; Special by singer and rapper Lizzo; and Harry’s House by English singer-songwriter Harry Styles.
The nominees for this year’s Song of the Year include “abcdefu” by Gayle, which rose to fame through social media; “About Damn Time” by singer and rapper Lizzo; “As It Was” by singer-songwriter Harry Styles; “Bad Habit” by singer-songwriter Steve Lacy; “BREAK MY SOUL” by singer-songwriter Beyonce; “All Too Well (Ten Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” by singer-songwriter Taylor Swift; “Easy on Me” by singer-songwriter Adele; “GOD DID” by professional DJ and record producer DJ Khaled; “The Heart Part 5” by singer-songwriter Kendrick Lamar; and “Just Like That” by American blues singer Bonnie Raitt.
The nominees for this year’s Record of the Year award include “Don’t Shut Me Down” by Swedish pop group, ABBA; “Easy on Me” by singer-songwriter Adele; “Break My Soul” by singer-songwriter Beyonce; “Good Morning Gorgeous” by singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige; “You And Me On The Rock” by singer-songwriters Brandi Carlile and Lucius; “Woman” by American rapper and singer Doja Cat; “Bad Habit” by singer-songwriter Steve Lacy; “The Heart Part 5” by singer-songwriter Kendrick Lamar; “About Damn Time” by singer and rapper Lizzo; and “As It Was” by singer-songwriter Harry Styles.
Besides the “Big Four,” many other nominees have scored bids in other categories such as in Visual Media or in specific types of genres of music such as Rock or Hip-Hop. Popular artists such as Kelly Clarkson, BTS, Bebe Rexha, Machine Gun Kelly, Jack Harlow, and Miranda Lambert have also scored nominations in other categories such as Best in Pop, Rock, Rap, R&B, and Country. Many of the awards this year include recognition for new famous songs that have emerged over the course of 2022, including Jack Harlow’s “First Class” and Doja Cat’s “Vegas.” Many different types of media have also scored nominations in categories such as Music for Visual Media and Musical Theater, including Six: Live On Opening Night, based on the hit Broadway musical; the soundtracks for blockbuster hits like Top Gun: Maverick, Encanto, and West Side Story; as well as Carolina by Taylor Swift for the movie, Where The Crawdads Sing.
Since the release of the Grammy award nominations, a variety of sources including Goldderby, Oakland Post, and Vulture have released the odds of who will take home this year’s Grammy awards. For the “Big Four,” polls from Goldderby say Good Morning Gorgeous by Mary J. Blige and Music of the Spheres by Coldplay are in the top spots for Album of the Year. “abcdefu” by Gayle and “God Did” by DJ Khaled feat. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend, and Fridayy” each have a major chance at Song of the Year. Additionally, Maneskin, Becky G, and Cody Johnson are contenders for Best New Artist while Good Morning Gorgeous by Mary J. Blige is the top contender for Record of the Year. With her large number of nominations, Beyonce also has a high chance of taking home some Grammy awards. Other names like BTS and Doja Cat are also popular for the top spots, while Disney’s Encanto may bring home a Grammy for media and MJ The Musical for Musical Theater.
Ultimately, the Grammy nominees are among the most famous in the United States music industry and are present within the rise of new pop culture in the United States. The Grammys are among the most anticipated award shows in the media industry, behind The Academy Awards and The Golden Globes. The Grammys ceremony takes place on Sunday, February 5, at 7:00 PM Eastern on CBS.
