One Met step at a time, the 2023 Met Gala officially came to a close on Monday, May 1. The Met Gala, or Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala held on the first Monday of May. This prestigious event supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

The theme for the 2023 Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Lagerfeld was a fashion designer who made a big mark on the fashion world. He is most well known for his designs for Chanel, Fendi, and his personal brand. The fashion designer passed away in 2019 due to cancer. The 2023 Met Gala was held to honor his contributions to fashion.

Many celebrities interpreted the theme by wearing designs by Lagerfeld, styles that Lagerfeld liked, and even his own personal style. Flowers and black and white designs were very common to see on the carpet.

Dua Lipa, one of the co-chairs for the night, is one example of a celebrity who wore a dress designed by Lagerfeld. She wore Lagerfeld’s couture bride dress from his 1992 collection. The special dress caught everyone’s attention when she walked out onto the carpet. It is one of the most memorable dresses from the night.

Celebrities also wore gowns and suits inspired by Lagerfeld’s signature elements in his designs. Anne Hathaway is one example of a celebrity who wore a dress inspired by other designs made by Lagerfeld. Hathaway wore a custom-made Versace dress with gold pin detailing. This dress was to honor Lagerfeld’s many designs with pins.

Throughout the evening, the attendees seemed to be walking up the steps smoothly until everyone’s attention was drawn to a new recent arrival. A “mystery” celebrity appeared on the carpet dressed in a life-sized cat costume. When the head was revealed, the audience learned that the “mystery” celebrity was Jared Leto. Leto wore the cat costume to honor Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette.

Doja Cat was another attendee, along with many, who honored Choupette. Doja wore a hand-beaded gown made by Oscar de la Renta. To top it all off, she had a prosthetic nose attached to form her face into looking like a cat. This style shocked many in attendance and many at home watching the live stream. Many opinions, both good and bad, flooded the internet after her arrival.

Flower detailing was another common theme seen on the Met steps. Bad Bunny is one celebrity who wore something with flowers. He was seen wearing a white Jacquemus suit with a long white floral train.

Similar to Bad Bunny, Rihanna was also seen wearing white flowers to commemorate Lagerfeld. However, she did not appear on the Vogue Live Stream because of her late arrival. Rihanna was seen all over Vogue wearing a custom dress from Valentino with a white flower cape. Although she did not appear until later, many at home were excited to see her as the surprise guest. She arrived with A$AP Rocky by her side.

Additional celebrities that were seen at the Met Gala include Kim Kardashian, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Nick Jonas, Jennifer Lopez, and Hugh Jackman.

Overall, the attendees interpreted the theme very well and in their own unique way. Whether it was wearing something made by Lagerfeld, commemorating him, or his personal style, many of the attendees were on theme. The 2023 Met Gala will always be a night of fashion to remember.
