Movies to watch during Halloween
Happy Halloween! Although Halloween might look slightly different this year, celebrations can still take place. And what’s a better way to celebrate than by watching bone-chilling blockbusters. Both nostalgic and up-and-coming movies are sure to get viewers into the Halloween spirit.
[Spoiler Alert!]
The new Netflix original, Hubie Halloween, tells the story of Hubie Dubois, who undergoes several frights on Halloween night. Hubie, played by Adam Sandler, is disliked by most of the citizens of Salem, Massachusetts. Despite this, Hubie patrols the town on Halloween night every year to protect people from the town’s paranormal activity. While Hubie is patrolling, he witnesses and hears about several people that have gone missing. Throughout the movie, Hubie rushes to identify the kidnapper, and he keeps an eye on his suspicious new neighbor Mr. Lambert. He does this all while worrying about his mother’s safety. Amid the craziness, Mrs. Dubois reveals that she abducted these people so they could be punished and burned for treating Hubie wrongfully. She reasons if the bullies were not so unkind, they wouldn’t be kidnapped. This comedic yet startling film will make viewers laugh, bring them the festive energy, and teach an important lesson about kindness.
Another favorite for this time of year is Hocus Pocus. This movie is also set in the haunted town of Salem, Massachusetts. A young boy Max just moved to town with his sister and parents. Max and his sister Dani meet a girl named Allison. Max refuses to believe the superstitious story his new friend Allison tells until he experiences it. Max accidentally resurrects and releases three ghosts who have been entrapped for over 300 years. The town exiled witches Winifred, Mary, and Sarah for practicing witchcraft, and the town has been peaceful since. Now that they are released, they intend to disrupt the peace while possessing children, haunting trick-or-treaters, and using spells on Halloween night. Max, Dani, Allison, and a magical cat have the children of Salem’s lives in their hands while they must stop the Sanderson witches before it’s too late. This movie is both exciting and spooky and will get viewers in the Halloween mood.
With every Halloween celebration, pumpkins are a regular occurrence. In It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang embrace both the trick-or-treating aspect of Halloween as well as pumpkins. This short but enticing film brings back nostalgia from elementary school. Charlie gets invited to Violet’s Halloween party while Linus waits for the great pumpkin to rise. The Peanuts gang goes trick or treating then gets to Violet’s party while Linus waits in the Pumpkin patch with Sally. Snoopy dresses up as a WW1 flying ace and gets into some trouble, but even he eventually makes it to the party. Everyone goes home, but Linus sleeps in the pumpkin patch awaiting the great pumpkin rising, which never happens.
If you’re looking for an action-packed supernatural comedy, Paul Feig’s got you covered. Both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II bring audiences a sense of fright and leaves them on the edge of your seat. I can assure you that you won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen. The first movie begins as three scientists get fired from their jobs. Then, the men decide to start their own business as paranormal investigators. After busting a ghost at a hotel, the ghostbusters business flourishes. However, the ghost-busting celebrities soon became overwhelmed with the amount of work and the unwanted attention from EPA agent Peck. While juggling their personal lives, ghosts, and suspicion from the EPA, the scientist’s headquarters explodes and releases all the spirits they had trapped. Peter, Ryan, Egon, and Winston must re-trap the ghosts, rescue Diana, and ensure New York City’s safety. As chaos rises, the ghostbusters battle the possessed dog Gozer and a god who takes form in a giant marshmallow man.
Ghostbusters II takes place five years later when the ghostbusters halt their ghost-busting due to their several lawsuits for disbanding the city. Diana’s child gets possessed, and the ghostbusters must jump back into the business. The scientists conduct their business illegally and are sent to court, where two more ghosts are released. The court allows scientists to continue ghostbusting, and the team finally has the right to work. The scientists scramble to contain the slime as it rises from the subway. They figure out how to beat the ghost with positively charged energy and participate in an exhausting battle at the museum. With the help of New Yorkers, the ghostbusters restore the city to serenity, and they receive praise and rewards.
Whether it’s trapping ghosts, chasing witches, investigating a mystery, or even waiting for the great pumpkin to rise, these Halloween themed movies are sure to excite viewers for Halloween and the festivities that come with it.
