“Enola Holmes 2” serves as an excellent sequel to “Enola Holmes”
The well known and loved “Enola Holmes” (2020) has recently seen a sequel released on Netflix on November 4, 2022. Major characters return such as Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown), Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), and Eudoria Holmes (Helena Bonham Carter).
The two movies have received similar ratings on IMDb, with the sequel receiving a slightly better rating of 6.8. New York Times states that “Millie Bobby Brown delivers an understated, playful performance in this young-adult mystery sequel.”
The second movie follows up on Enola’s journey as a detective, as she now faces a new case. Enola struggles throughout the movie in being able to ask for help while maintaining her independence. Her relationship with Lord Tewkesbury also advances this season, with a few ups and downs.
The movie is based on a true story and involves the themes of feminism and using one’s voice. The true story involves the Matchgirls’ strike in 1888, an inspiring event in history in which women were able to rebel against the harsh conditions in their jobs. “Enola Holmes 2” makes these inspiring true events become known as it involves an adaptation of the original story. Ravza Yilmaz (‘26), a Cherry Hill East student, states that “[she] liked how the plot connected to a real life event in history.” Another student (‘26) mentioned that they preferred the second movie as it had more romance, humor, and mystery in it.
The story begins with Enola starting her own detective agency which unfortunately didn’t have much business and success. As Enola is about to give up, a mysterious case arrives with a young girl named Bessie asking Enola to solve a case involving the disappearance of her sister, Sarah Chapman. From there, Enola experiences both good and bad with her case. She even gets arrested at one point due to being framed for a murder. Eventually Enola and Sherlock team up to discover the true cause for the disappearance of Sarah, with a shocking ending. Enola and Sherlock discover their strength in working together as they combine their independence and intelligence to solve the case. Enola’s mother returns for part of the movie but doesn’t stay for long which demonstrates Enola’s maturity as her own woman.
Overall, the movie was a fun and action packed watch that involved lots of twists and turns that contributed to the mystery and thrill aspects of the movie. Enola, a well loved character, resonates with a lot of teen girls as she deals with love and the expectations of society.
