“Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd” becomes an immediate fan favorite
Beloved singer-songwriter, Lana Del Rey, released a 16-track album at midnight on March 24, 2023. The album titled, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, is the singer’s ninth studio album.
Track 2, the title track, was released initially on December 7, 2022. This poetic song immediately received acclaim and support in the industry and became popular through TikTok. After a long wait, two more singles were released: “A&W” on February 14, 2023, and then “The Grants” on March 14, 2023.
“A&W” is a seven minute long song separated into two parts. The first 4 to 5 minutes are acoustic and titled by Del Rey and her producers, “American Wh*re.” Then, the upbeat, viral section is titled “Jimmy” due to the famed line “Jimmy, Jimmy cocoa puff / Jimmy, Jimmy ride.” Billboard ranked this as the best song on the album.
The title of track 1, “The Grants” is based on her family name as Del Rey’s birth name is Elizabeth “Lizzy” Grant. This gorgeous ballad has seen less media attention than the other two singles, but that doesn’t take away from its beauty. It is sentimental and thought-provoking.
This album has six features including Jon Batiste, SYML, RIOPY, Father John Misty, Bleachers, and Tommy Genesis. Of these, “Let the Light In” with Father John Misty is the most enticing in listeners’ opinions. Many have put this song at the top of their rankings.
Track 9, “Fingertips” is lyrically some of her best work. A song about mortality, Del Rey’s raw emotions, and the intricacies of the past and future, each lyric is gorgeously poetic.
Some odd lyrics on other tracks have caught attention from fans, including “Hands on your knees I’m Angelina Jolie” (and many other lines in “Peppers”), and “Pass me my vape, I’m feeling sick, I need to take a puff.”
Before the album’s release, there was a trend usually called “Lana Del Rey Coquette Aesthetic.” While mainly a stab at Tumblr, people see a particular alignment from some of these new songs to that aesthetic, such as “Paris, Texas.”
Overall, this album has similar themes to those of her other albums. This allows her to capture a wide fanbase of people who can relate while consistently bringing fresh and unique ideas to mix in. Lana Del Rey is rightfully loved due to her beautiful music.
