Dick’s Sporting Good’s puts an end to selling assault weapons
The world, specifically America, is currently in a heated debate about guns. Following the recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida inciting student protests nationwide, Dick’s Sporting Goods has released a statement regarding the situation and introducing new policies.
While gun reform in America remains an intense battleground for both citizens and government officials, Dick’s Sporting Goods decided to take control of the situation by instituting their own regulations. First and foremost, Dick’s Sporting Goods will no longer sell “assault-style firearms.” Similarly, it will no longer sell “high capacity magazines.” In addition, Dick’s Sporting Goods raised its age restriction on purchasing a firearm to 21.
These changes stemmed from the fact that Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland shooter, purchased a shotgun from a Dick’s Sporting Goods retail store in November of 2017. Although this was not the weapon used in the massacre, it hit home with Dick’s Sporting Goods Chairman and CEO, Edward Stack.
Due to their statement, Dick’s Sporting Goods faces backlash, which they expected. I find this move groundbreaking. Not only did the company change its own rules and regulations but it also suggests “our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform.” This is a step in the right direction. Big companies such as Dick’s Sporting Goods have the power and the platform to make a change in society and others should follow suit.
In a time where change is needed, Dick’s Sporting Goods stepped up to the plate…and definitely swung for the fences.
