If there’s one thing I learned from being a freshman so far, it’s that we’re underestimated. In the high school social ladder, we’re hanging from the lowest rung. But we, the Class of 2016, have already caused a small upset in the Spirit Week Dance. And as a student representative, I can say we plan on maintaining this reputation, continuing with the freshmen dance.
This year’s freshmen dance will be in cafeteria two on Friday, January 18, at 7 p.m. The theme is “Night Glow,” the result of a class-wide vote taken during break two before winter break. After the completed ballots were separated based on theme, the “Night Glow” pile put the others to shame. You could say choosing a theme wasn’t difficult.
While the glow-in-the-dark theme does sound simple compared to themes like Red Carpet, it has allowed us to get creative with decorations. You’d be surprised. There’s a lot of glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia on the internet.
So what should freshmen look forward to? Food (it’ll be good, we promise). Unique souvenirs. Decorations we actually spent money on (much unlike the eighth grade dances). Upbeat music. And of course, the T-shirt. As the designer, I intended it to be eye-catching and reflective of the theme with its bright colors on a black background.
We freshmen—we’re not magic. There’s only so much we can do with our cafeteria. But come with a date or with friends. Either way, we could surprise you again.
