East collects over 5,800 food donations during spirit week
November 23, 2016
Spirit week is a time filled with school spirit, competition and high energy. However, philanthropy is another key aspect during spirit week.
Each grade decorates booths according to their respective themes. Canned food items are placed in the booths. The cans are collected throughout the week and then donated to a local food drive.
The first grade to reach 800 cans receives an extra 100 spirit week points. Each other grade can receive up to 800 points for cans, with each food item counting as one point.
The senior class reached 801 items on the second day of collection, causing them to receive an extra 100 points in addition to 800 points for cans. On the second day, the sophomores and juniors were tied for second place with the freshman trailing in last for can donations.
By the fourth day, the seniors still led can donations with 1200 items donated. 500 items behind were the Class of 2018 with 700 items donated, then the sophomores with 300 items donated and then the freshman with 250 items donated.
The freshman led in can donations with 2,797 items donated, but will only receive 800 spirit week points.
By the last day of donation, the sophomores doubled their donations from the fourth day with 600 cans donated. The sophomores will receive 600 spirit week points for can collection.
In total, Cherry Hill East collected 5,875 canned food items that will be donated to a local food drive. As a reward, Cherry Hill East Principal Dr. Dennis Perry will go on display in the marketing case in C-wing during both lunch breaks for one day. Also, some teachers, including Activities Director Mr. CJ Davis, will have to sleep on the roof for one night.
