It’s been two weeks since the first presidential debate took place between incumbent President Biden and former President Trump, and quite the debate it was. With accusations of having intercourse with an adult film star as well as arguing over who would win in a driving contest in golf, it was definitely an interesting debate. While many enjoyed watching it like another episode of their favorite comedy, others felt like they were watching a nightmare. Post-debate, top Democratic politicians and advocates such as a handful of senators and representatives began calling President Biden unfit for the role, citing issues of cognitive decline as a reason. 

But why has it taken almost four years for Democrats to start saying what the rest of the country – actually what the rest of the world has been saying? Since 2019, names like “Sleepy Joe” have been used over and over to describe the president, yet nobody batted an eye. The world has watched as Biden has slipped up word after word, and froze at public events. Now, Democrat celebrities like George Clooney are calling for Biden to drop out just weeks after he headlined a fundraiser for the president. 

In a skit performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel plays Biden in a phone call between himself and former President Barack Obama. In the skit, Biden asks the caller, “Who is this?” to which Obama replies, “Barack.” The response is, “You’re going to have to be more specific.”

So it seems that there is a consensus that the current president is unfit for reelection, let alone his original election, but that does not mean that Democrats want to give the election to Trump. According to CNN, Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont) has said,

“The stakes could not be higher. Regular Vermonters are worried [Biden] cannot win this time, and they’re terrified of another Trump Presidency.” 

So there it is. Democrats aren’t truly worried about Biden’s mental decline, but instead are worried about what seems like an inevitable landslide victory for Donald Trump. According to The Atlantic, Trump was projected for a 320-electoral-vote win before Biden’s disastrous debate performance. As of this past Monday, The Economist has given Trump a 75% chance of winning. Why?

The answer is that Trump takes cognitive tests before debates. Because Trump doesn’t fund a foreign war only to receive kickbacks on it via his son. Because Trump didn’t get the U.S. involved in a single war. Because Trump was making peace in the Middle East via the Abraham Accord; treaties between Israel and four Arab countries. Because Trump doesn’t imprison his political opponents.

In the modern day, there has never been an election as crucial as this one. With a Trump win, conservatives hope for a restoration of the greatness that was once this country. With a Biden win, well only Biden will win that one. It is clear that these past four years have been nothing short of a catastrophe, starting with the disastrous withdrawal in Afghanistan, to rising tensions between the Yemenite Houthis and the Americans, and Hezbollah and Israel. To say we are on the brink of a third World War would not be absolutely ridiculous. What would be ridiculous is thinking that the solution to this problem is what caused it in the first place – weak American leadership.

For now, only time will tell the future of this country.
