Fetty Wap debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 Chart
Hip-hop artist Willie Maxwell II, better known by his stage name Fetty Wap, released his debut studio album on Sept. 25, 2015. Fetty Wap is relatively local, hailing from Paterson, New Jersey. His self-titled album, Fetty Wap, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. With his fourth single from the album, Wap became the first artist in the “Hot Rap Songs” chart to chart his first four singles in the top 10 simultaneously.
Fetty Wap begins his debut album with perhaps his most well-known single: “Trap Queen.” This was Wap’s first single, which began to gain recognition in November of 2014. One of the most popular songs of the 2015 summer, “Trap Queen” is a mesh between hip-hop and pop. It has the ability to appeal to a wide range of audiences with its catchy, upbeat tune and simple lyrics: “in love with the money I ain’t ever letting’ go,” Fetty Wap raps.
“679” quickly catches the attention of listeners as Wap compliments his rapping with a chorus in which he shows off his unique singing voice. “Remy Boyz they know us, no hood can control us,” he raps with his Remy Boy comrades. The only features on the album are from Wap’s close group of friends in New Jersey. The group collectively calls themselves “Remy Boyz.”
The album continues on with “I’m Straight,” a track honoring Wap’s place of birth and upbringing. “From the garden, where you better watch for them snakes,” Wap raps, indicating that New Jersey (also known as the Garden State) is his territory and that he’s protective over the place that molded him into who he is today.
Fetty Wap’s soothing vocals engulf listeners in the pop-trap anthem “Couple Bands.” The artist raps about coming into money and fame early on in his life; “I don’t even know if I’m living this life right —but I gotta go and get it.” Wap rapidly switches tempo, proving that he can combine vocals and flow to create several top 10 hits all from the same body of work.
