Birdman takes home the big award of the night at the SAG Awards
On Jan. 25 at 8 p.m., the film awards season continued on with the commencement of the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, an award show that honors superb performances in film and prime time television.
The first award of the night was for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series and was presented to Uza Aduba for her role of Crazy Eyes in the show “Orange is the New Black.”
Following this award, the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor award was given to William H. Macy for his performance in “Shameless.” Macy accepted this award with a humorous speech thanking his cast and crew.
Next “Orange is the New Black” won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Aduba gave a thankful speech on behalf of the cast to the show and its fans.
Patricia Arquette won Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance in “Boyhood,” a film that was filmed over a span of 12 years.
The award for Male Actor in a Supporting Role was given to J.K. Simmons for his role in “Whiplash.”
Mark Ruffalo, who acted in Foxcatcher, received the award for Male Actor in a Television Series or Miniseries. However, because Ruffalo could not attend the award show, Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o accepted the award on his behalf.
The award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries was won by Frances McDormand for her lead role in “Olive Kitteridge.”
Following McDormand, Carrie Fisher gave the prestigious Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award to her mother Debbie Reynolds.
Kevin Spacey won the award for Male Actor in a Drama Series. Spacey, just like Ruffalo was not in attendance, and so Eric Dane and Emmy Rossum accepted the award on his behalf.
Female Actor in a Drama Series was the next award. The category had six nominations but the ultimate winner was Viola Davis for her performance in “How to Get Away with Murder.”
Downtown Abbey was named the recipient of the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
Following this award, Eddie Redmayne won the award for Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the film “The Theory of Everything.” Redmayne made a heartfelt dedication of his award to those around the world living with ALS.
Next, Mathew McConaughey presented the award for Female Actor in a Leading Role to Julianne Moore. Moore acted in “Still Alice” as Alice Howland, a doctor suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Finally, to end the night, the award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture went to Birdman, the film about a washed up actor who attempts to rocket his career with a very risky Broadway production.
This award ended the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards. Viewers can now look forward to the Directors Guild of America Awards, which will be on Feb. 7.
