Jane’s Tea House brings a unique spin to afternoon tea time
Jane’s Tea House, a newly opened tea house in Haddon Heights, brings a unique and innovative spin on all things tea. Opened on August 2nd, 2020, the tea house serves breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
With the slogan, “reinventing tea time”, Jane’s Tea House aims to “modernize [afternoon tea] a bit”, and introduce it to a broad audience of people, “not just moms and grandmas”, says Maggie Pajak, who co-owns the eatery with her husband Christian Pajak, sister Jenny Bellizia, and brother-in-law Vincent Bellizia.
During my visit to Jane’s Tea House, I noticed plenty of modern touches incorporated into the interior of the restaurant, such as a selfie station and a gift shop. These elements complemented the elegance of the restaurant, and added to the eatery’s overall sophisticated but cozy ambience.
Moreover, a noteworthy aspect of Jane’s Tea House are their regularly hosted special events. In the past, Jane’s Tea House has hosted events such as Tea with Sinatra, a tea party celebrating Frank Sinatra’s music, and the Halloween-themed Wickedly Witches tea party. The tea house currently has plans for a Downton Abbey inspired tea party and a Great Gatsby inspired tea party, as well as holiday events, including Ugly Sweater tea parties and Tea with Santa. In addition, the tea house intends to launch a Gentleman’s Tea next year.
Besides these themed events, another aspect of Jane’s Tea House that sets it apart from others is their creative menu. The tea house frequently updates their menus with additions such as their meatloaf cupcake and Thanksgiving menu.
So, how does the team at Jane’s Tea House come up with so many new recipes? Jeana and Sarah, two of the restaurant’s bakers, spoke about their “freedom to experiment with new things all the time”. For example, the bakers used Milky Ways to create the recipe for the salted caramel scones sold at the tea house’s “Tea With Sinatra” event. Not only does Jane’s Tea House offer a variety of desserts and tea time dishes, but they also provide a diverse menu of teas.
“We [wanted] to teach Americans about different varieties of tea, other than just black tea and English tea,” says Vincent Bellizia, a co-owner of Jane’s Tea House. Indeed, Jane’s Tea House offers more than 40 different teas from the prestigious Metropolitan Tea Company, ranging from familiar blends such as Earl Grey and English Breakfast, to the more adventurous Pina Colada and Caramel Cherry Cheesecake.
During my visit to Jane’s Tea House, I ordered the Afternoon Tea box, an assortment of delicious desserts, tea sandwiches, a choice of scone, and of course, tea. I would highly recommend the Afternoon Tea box: each and every item in the package was delicious, and there was plenty of food to satisfy at least two people. In addition, the Strawberry Kiwi iced tea that I ordered with the Afternoon Tea box was refreshing and flavorful, balancing a subtle sweetness with the fruity notes. I also tried a cup of Belgian Chocolate tea, as well as chocolate chip scones. Accompanied with clotted cream, lemon curd, and jam, the freshly-baked chocolate chip scone was crumbly and buttery on the outside, while soft and chocolatey on the inside, and it paired perfectly with the rich, aromatic Belgian Chocolate tea.
Overall, I would highly recommend dining at Jane’s Tea House. Reservations are needed, and you can book a spot on their website, janesteahouse.com, or call 856-508-0080. Customers can also order online, and Jane’s Tea House offers both takeout and delivery. Currently, the tea house has COVID-19 safety measures in place. implements social distancing guidelines, requires masks, regular cleans and disinfecting, conducting temperature checks, as well as using HEPA filters. The tea house actively posts about upcoming events and new menu additions on their social media pages, @reinventingteatime (Instagram) and @JanesTeaHouse (Twitter).
You can visit Jane’s Tea House at 602 Station Avenue, Haddon Heights, NJ.
