Taylor Swift did it once again. The pop star released yet another Billboard Hot 100 hit single that maintained the number one spot on the list for its first six weeks following the highly anticipated release. The self-deprecating anthem is yet another example of Swift’s songwriting abilities. With powerful lyrics like “Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism,” “Anti-Hero” truly has an impact on the listener. Stemming from the ever-so relatable lyric, “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me,” the single grew it’s popularity through a TikTok trend. Swift’s story-telling, lyricism, and vocals make “Anti-Hero” one of the top singles of 2022.

“As It Was” – Harry Styles
Serving as the lead single to Styles’ latest album “Harry’s House,” “As It Was” is an upbeat pop song which adds a new, exciting touch to the singer’s discography. “As It Was” maintained the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart which has only been accomplished by three other songs in history. The song pays homage to eighties style pop-rock and certainly does it justice. Styles conceals a heartfelt story about love behind his euphonious vocals and fun rhythm all of which contributes to the song’s great popularity and success. A colorful and aesthetically pleasing music video also accompanies the single which helps to illustrate Styles’ artful lyrics.

“Nobody Gets Me” – SZA
Closing out 2022, SZA released her third studio album “SOS.” This album includes the stellar, hit single, “Nobody Gets Me.” “Kill Bill” is a close second when it comes to SZA’s top songs of the year; however, “Nobody Gets Me” stands out the most amongst the singer’s major releases of the year. Showcasing the artist’s outstanding vocals, the song is a step back from SZA’s other upbeat songs and highlights her voice. The song immediately landed a high spot on the Billboard Hot 100 upon release, and it is accompanied by a music video as well. The single has gained much popularity, and it is the perfect song to wrap up 2022’s year in music.

“Bad Habit” – Steve Lacy
Following its June release, “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy quickly became the song of the summer and one of the best singles of the year. The track went viral on TikTok and was a part of many trends on the social media app which increased its popularity. “Bad Habit” also spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Serving as Lacy’s first major hit single, the song is a soulful blend of rock and R&B music that absolutely catches one’s ear.

“About Damn Time” – Lizzo
Lizzo is notable for her high-energy, upbeat songs that encourage a listener to want to dance and sing along. Lizzo’s single, “About Damn Time,” follows this pattern. Earning its own viral dance on TikTok, the single from April of 2022 has seen immense success. The song is a mixture of disco-style pop and R&B, and it highlights Lizzo’s vocal range accompanied by fun lyrics. The incredibly catchy song helped to define 2022 in music, and it surely helps to shape Lizzo’s profile as a musician. With lyrics that one just can’t help but sing along to, “About Damn Time” helped to define 2022’s music scene.
