LGBTQIA2+ By The Letters

You’ve probably heard some version of the phrase “LGBTQ+” before. You might even know what some or all of the letters mean. But do you understand the history of each community represented within that acronym, and why they matter? If not, and if you’d like to learn more, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for the “A, B, C’s” of the LGBTQIA2+ community, with in-depth explanations and background information for every letter.

It is important to note that for many terms, there is no one-size-fits-all definition. While we’ll cover the most common definitions, all are encouraged to use gender- and sexuality-related terms however they feel works best for them. Additionally, there are various versions of the term LGBTQ+, including LGBT, LGBTQ, and LGBTQIA2+. Every community’s inclusion matters, regardless of which letters are included in these terms’ interchangeable usage.
