Cougars get revenge on rival Indians

Led by Chris Santo’s (’11) 17 pts, the Cherry Hill East boys basketball team avenged an early season loss by defeating division rival Lenape High School, 42-37, yesterday afternoon in the DiBart Gym. East last played Lenape on Jan. 4 which ended in a 30-29 loss for the Cougars.
“We played a more patient line of offense [today than during our last game versus Lenape],” Santo said.
The Cougars have been on a serious roll as of late, as this Lenape win was their 13th win in a row. The team is primed to make a deep run in the NJSIAA playoffs and are projected to be the 2 seed in the South Jersey Group 4 bracket, which are set to begin in just a few weeks.
“We have had better team ball movement. Everyone has improved” said Marc Schlessel, who scored 7 points and added 2 late crunch-time free throws.
The game started out a bit slow for the Cougars, as the team was down 5-6 after one quarter of play. But, Santo and Co. headed into halftime with a 15-14 lead. At the end of the third quarter, East was winning 27-25. They never relinquished the lead after that point en route to an impressive W.
With the win, East improved to 15-3 on the year. The next game for the Cougars is February 10th, when East will take on another one of its division rivals, Cherokee High School, in the DiBart Gym. East beat Cherokee earlier this season to the tune of 74-55.
“I think if we continue to play the way we have been, then we’re poised to make a run in the playoffs,” said Santo.
