December is a month when many movies are released, and those movies are notorious for earning nominations for Oscar Awards. These must-see movies are far from typical, as there is a complete variety in the genres, as well as in the actors who are performing. Stop in for a movie in the month of December, and you may be impressed.On December 5, Cadillac Records makes its debut. Taking place in Chicago in the 1950’s, the musical drama shows every aspect of the hectic lives of some of America’s musical legends of the film’s time period. Stars portrayed in the movie include: Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Howlin’ Wolf (Eamonn Walker), Etta James (Beyonce Knowles) and Chuck Berry (Mos Def). The movie shows the truth behind the smiling faces of celebrities; it is a story of the drama, inevitable love and utter hatred that is guaranteed with achieving legendary status.

On December 12, Nothing Like the Holidays, starring Debra Messing, Freddy Rodriguez, and John Leguizamo, will be released. Nothing Like the Holidays is a dramedy about the lives of a Latino family during the holiday season. The film tells the heart-warming story of a former love, an aspiring actress, a preoccupied wife and a divorce that make up one completely dysfunctional family.

Also coming out on December 12 is the sci-fi thriller The Day the Earth Stood Still. A robot invasion strikes planet Earth as a flying saucer lands in Washington DC. The alien, Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), and his robot-friend, Gort, step out of the saucer and on to Earth. Klaatu discovers more about Earth and finds faith in the human race. Gort, however, is vengeful after watching Klaatu get shot, and makes it his mission to destroy Earth. The two must find a common truth about humans, and decide whether or not they are worth saving. The movie is a remake of the original The Day the Earth Stood Still, which premiered in 1951. In this remake, the creators are making an attempt to create something similar to the original.

The drama Seven Pounds premieres on December 19. Will Smith stars as Ben, an IRS agent who is haunted by memories of mistakes he has made in his past. He attempts repentance by trying to positively change the lives of seven strangers. After encountering one of the strangers, Emily (Rosario Dawson), he falls in love with her. He not only changes the lives of seven people, but also recovers from the depression his past had brought him.
