Redefining art
Vivian Rong, Melissa Vital, and Jamie Bookbinder
Cherry Hill High School East’s art program includes many talented students of the East community. Here, some of East’s students’ art is displayed. Art is redefined in this multimedia package, as many different and unique mediums of art are explored. Art students at East express themselves in different ways, and the categories stretch beyond a mere paint palette.
Expression done through visual art
Visual art can be manifested in a surprising number of ways. There’s the obvious painting, drawing, digital art, and sculpting, but visual art also entails photography, film-making, design, animation, architecture, and much more. They are the products of an ongoing evolution in which the meaning of art and modes of expressing it have changed. Firstly, in terms of painting, drawing, and digital...
How students and teachers handled art education during COVID-19
At East, students have an opportunity to learn something that is unteachable: creativity. Some classes can help students explore a buried passion. These classes turn imagination into a form of expression. These classes are art classes. However, during an unprecedented pandemic, the opportunities for art students have changed dramatically with students both in school and in virtual learning. Students...
East alumna Marly Gates (’20) expresses through culinary arts
Flour. Frosting. Stirring and mixing. Art comes in many different forms, including the guilty pleasure of baked goods. Not only do baked goods serve an important purpose in the opinions of one’s taste buds, but they are also pieces of beautiful art in their own way. Marly Gates (‘20) has a strong passion for baking and the art of pastry making and recently graduated from East in 2020. She is...
East alumnus Patrick Kelly (’21) expresses art through music
If orchestrated properly, the harmonic blending of instruments coming together at a musical performance can be truly breathtaking. Some might describe the experience as pleasurable, some might say music can be groundbreaking, and some (daringly so) might argue that music is an art. Over time, music has proven to be a respected form of self-expression, so what is the debate about music being an art...

“I painted these works merely because I wanted to go to a place where I felt peace in the midst of this pandemic. Although I was not able to go on any vacations due to the coronavirus, I was still able to feel peace and comfort while painting these works!” ...

“These are two drawings I did where I tried focusing specifically on making them look as realistic as possible and enrapturing all of the details from my reference photos. They are both done in pencil but the sharp contrast obviously comes with the use of colored pencil in the Twix bar drawing. Overall, these are some of my favorite drawings because going through the process of creating them helped...

“1. I often have issues with artist’s block. It’s not uncommon that I’ll sit down in front of my watercolors, washi tape, paper, water, all laid out, and not know what to do. However, my friends give me inspiration. Not just for art, but in all areas of my life. Here, I think back to that instant. That point in time where you’re connected to another person, through a hug. It feels warm and...

“Honestly I am mostly a self-taught artist so I am more used to doing art at home than at school anyway, so this hasn't really changed much. The pandemic had given me time to focus on doing more technical studies, but it also allowed me to greater pursue my personal projects (like my youtube channel 3sides1eye where I make animatics weekly) and develop my style further. I want to be an artist professionally,...

“This photo was taken for our composition project in the Intermediate Photography Class. This is a picture of a reed in a field that was being pushed by the wind. I believe the image captures the drama of the weather that day. The composition here is to stop action.” “This photo was taken for fun. It is a glass ball put on the Delaware Bay on a day that was calm. The tide was out and the water...

“These are two consecutive pages from my current graphic novel project. I developed the story idea starting in quarantine. This project is what I work on for my AP sustained investigation but I have also worked on it outside of school. The two pages depict the main character of the graphic novel waking up after a long night in the forest, surveying her surroundings, and spotting something in the...

“Something I love about photography is being able to capture art in ordinary things. I took both of these photos while I was taking photos for fun, and I love being able to find beauty within everyday life. The photo of the moon in the night sky reminds me of darkness surrounding a sliver of light. I think that even though the photo is simple, it shows the moon in detail with its soft inner edge....
