Oi!

Oi!: is not just an expression. Oi! is a subgenre of punk rock that emerged in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. Oi!, also known as street punk, is a more gritty version of punk set out to express a more working-class view of punk rock.  What distinguishes Oi! lyrically is generally a more melodic chorus than traditional punk, which comes from British soccer chants, and lyrical themes of punk rockers uniting. Sham 69, an Oi! band credited with helping starting the genre, can be a great introduction for someone wanting to get into Oi!. Other bands worth a listen include The Cockney Rejects, Blitz and The Adicts. “Viva La Revolution” by The Adicts, with its catchy guitar riff and even catchier chorus, provides a good peek into what Oi! Is all about.
