Faykes played a pivitol part in East’s slim 95-91 win over arch-rival Cherry Hill West on Wednesday, January 7, when East and West met for their annual rivalry swim meet. East was leading the meet 87-85 heading into the 400 freestyle relay, the final event. West needed to get first and third in this race to win the meet. All East needed to do was win the race to win the meet. It all came down to the 400 relay. East ended up winning the relay in 3:40:54, thanks to Faykes’s race changing third leg, when she opened up a significant lead over a West swimmer that allowed more breathing room for the final leg of the race. Prior to the third leg, West and East were neck and neck for first place. After Faykes’s contribution, teammate Jess Simunek (’09) cemented the win by outracing West swimmers on the final leg of the race.
