On Saturday, October 6, the Cougars defeated the Cumberland Colts 32-0. This is the Cougar’s first varsity win, and Coach Daley’s first home win of the season.

In the first few moments of the game, the Cougars scored a safety against the Colts. Briefly after, Dante Gazzola (‘19) scored East’s first touchdown. After a turnover in East’s favor, Isaac Jean-Baptiste (‘19), scored East’s second touchdown of the game. Mitchell Donovan (‘19) scored an exciting third touchdown for the Cougars. Ben Greenberg (‘19)  also scored three extra kicks in the first quarter, leaving East at a promising lead of 23-0 against the Colts.

The second quarter proved itself just as intense: the Cougars scored the second safety of the game. Nick Gazzola (‘19)  scored the Cougars’ fourth touchdown, and Greenberg scored yet another extra point. Despite strong attempts from the opposing team, the Cougars were able to hold off the Cumberland Colts.

During halftime, the East marching band performed their spectacular field show in preparation for their festival next weekend to the song “Firebird Suite” by Igor Stravinsky. The East Cheerleaders also performed their impressive routine with many flips and tosses.

The third and fourth quarters of the game showed no change in score. East was not able to score a fifth touchdown, but they were able to hold back the Colts with interceptions in the fourth quarter. With one minute left in the game, both the team and fans knew that East had secured the win. At the sound of the final buzzer, East had defeated Cumberland 32-0.

Coach Daley said, “I’m excited … I knew we had it in us. We came out and played to our full potential, and it just shows that great things can happen when you play to your potential.”

The Cougars look to continue their winning streak next week in their game against Egg Harbor Township on October 12 in Egg Harbor.
