B.O.E. Representative candidates deliver speeches to SGA

Members of the Student Government Association gathered in Cafeteria 1 during first period on Thursday, April 28 to listen to B.O.E. Representative Candidates for the 2011-2012 school year.

Mr. Dappolone, SGA Advisor, began the meeting by delivering some announcements to the organization, including a solicitation for volunteers to help out on Sunday during the Jeremy Kane Benefit Run that will occur on Sunday, May 1 to honor the brave sacrifice of LCpl Jeremy Kane.

Each candidate had a choice to speak about four different topics that would be relevant to the representatives’ relationship with the East community and Board of Education.

Lily Campbell (‘12) spoke first, about implementing updated technology in the East. One of her ideas is to make sure “every classroom has a Smartboard and updated computer.”

Then, Jamie DeVito (‘12) advocated schedule changes, followed by Sherry Kim (‘12), who spoke about not using class rank.

Frances Kopew (‘12) then delivered a speech outlining her ideas about changing the timing of lunch and having more healthy choices. Rachel Shifman (‘12) then shared her views on changing the curriculum, in having more analytic tests than multiple-choice tests and to preserve the challenging academic rigor of East.

Jackie Susuni (‘12) spoke next, advocating that communication comes in more than one form and to implement both inner and outer school communication. She explained her role as utilizing the Eastside B.O.E. Rep column and then online ways for students to be alert of what is going on within the Board of Education.

Leah Terez (‘12) was the last candidate to speak; she also believed class rank should be considered differently.

“We need to think of this school as a whole, not just ten people,” said Terez during her speech.

Following these speeches, SGA representatives and officers voted on scantrons for up to three individuals. These three individuals will move on to the next round of being interviewed by a panel consisting of faculty members and a select group of students.

That committee will work together to then announce the Board of Education Representative and Alternate Board of Education Representative at a later date.

The BOE Reps go to all the BOE meetings and then report that information to the East student body through the SGA meetings.
