Snapchat released a new update on Jan. 27. The update includes a slight redesign of the app and a few new features that include a new way to add friends and “Discover.” However, the best friends list, an old feature, was removed.
On the old Snapchat, the only way to add new friends to Snapchat contacts was by typing in a friend’s username. Since the update, users can add other users by opening the Snapchat app on their phone and focusing it on a Snapchat ghost logo that is personalized for their account.
“It’s easier to type people’s usernames in. Having to deal with the new system is difficult and unnecessary.” said Kyle Lochbiler (’15).
The new “Discover” feature shows daily Snapchat Stories from CNN, Comedy Central, Cosmopolitan, Daily Mail, Snapchat, ESPN, Food Network, National Geographic, People, Vice, Yahoo! News and Warner Music Group. Users can see daily updates on events in the world, instead of the usual hourly Snapchat Stories from their friend’s lives.
“I think it is a cool idea to see what is happening in the world and maybe see stuff that you would get to see normally,” said Hunter Berkowitz (’17).
The last main change in the new update was the removal of the best friends list. This is a temporary change, and Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel said that it will be back in a future update. It was taken away because some celebrities did not want their private snapchats available to the public.
“I’m disappointed about it but I think it’s the only bad thing about the new update,” said Josh Snyder (’17).
