Saturday Night Live “Anna Faris/Duffy”

Alyssa Guckin ('12) September 28, 2008
Anna Faris took the Saturday Night Live stage this week (Sept 27) as host. Her opening sequence showed how the rest of the show would be- funny, but not falling off the couch in laughter. This week's skits on SNL included: "Sarah Palin Interview”, "New Friends," "The First Presidential Debate," "Rowboat Date," "Weekend Update," "Scores," "Deep House Dish," "Googie Rene's Slightly Stained Wedding Dress Basement" and "Superior Ex-Boyfriend." Anna Faris went on to star in six of these skits, bringing something to each set. Musical artist, Duffy, performed two of her hit songs, "Mercy" and "Standing Stone", before the night was over.

Grey’s Anatomy “Dream a Little Dream of Me”

Danielle Burkhart ('09)/For Eastside September 27, 2008
Grey’s Anatomy debuted its first show of season five. This two hour premiere gives us time to catch up with our favorite doctors, and not to mention the famous Dr. McDreamy. During the episode the hospital fights to regain its top position as the second teaching program, but struggles to keep it together. The hospital's ranking is now at 12, which crazes the chief. Six patients are brought to the hospital after being in car accidents, all being best friends and married couples. Callie, Bailey and the chief work together on a surgery that’s only been performed a handful of times. The three freeze a man's body in hopes that he will walk again. Complications occur during the surgery, but they pull through with success.

Bones “The Perfect Pieces in the Purple Pond”

Gina Ascola (’09)/Eastside Staff September 27, 2008
Bones fans anxiously tuned in this week to see the return of Dr. Zack Addy. Last season, Zack confessed to being the cannibalistic serial killer Gormogon’s apprentice, as well as admitting to murdering one of Gormogon’s victims. As a result, Zack was sent to a mental institution for a mental imbalance. Before Wednesday’s episode, viewers have not seen Zack since the season finale.

Fringe – “The Ghost Network”

Agent Dunham is told to investigate an apparent terrorist attack on a local city bus. The terrorist exposed the passengers on the bus to a deadly toxin that strangely froze all victims in place with some sort of gooey substance completely surrounding their bodies. Following some investigation with Peter, hey discover that most (if not all) of “the trend” can be attributed to past experiments conducted by Walter prior to his institutionalization.

House “Not Cancer”

Five years ago in House time, an organ donor provided various organs for those in need. Now, almost everyone who has received an organ from him is either dead or dying, with no seemingly related symptoms. However, House cannot focus on the case he is hired to diagnose. Instead, he is reliving nostalgic memories about Wilson, since Wilson “broke up” with him and moved away. The wistfulness does not last long, however, because House gets the first doctor he sees to buy him lunch in the cafeteria. Additionally, he sits at the same table as this doctor, who is under the impression that House is hitting on him and is not particularly interested in him in one way or another. Not to worry: “I’ll grow on you,” says House.

Gossip Girl “The Ex-List”

Ashley Drazen (’09)/Eastside Staff September 23, 2008
Senior year is what everyone anticipates, everyone except Dan and Serena. They both dread going back to school, having to deal with confrontation after their dramatic breakup. There seems to be a twist to the plot when a new girl, Amanda, arrives. Blair calls her the “female Dan”, which only causes more controversy. Also, we finally see that Lily has returned from her honeymoon, but Bart, her new hubby, is continually on business trips forcing her to be alone. One of the most shocking parts of the episode is witnessing Lady Catherine and Marcus kissing in private. Vanessa happens to see this unfortunate event and takes a picture on her cell phone for proof.

Heroes “The Butterfly Effect”

Literally, the last time we saw our favorite heroes was nine months ago. Nathan Petrelli was just about to declare that “special people” (i.e. those with abilities) exist on live television, when he was suddenly shot in the chest. The show picked up four years in the future, where Claire, who now has long brown hair as opposed blond, is about to shoot her uncle, Peter. It seems as though in this future world, Heroes are hunted down so their abilities can be tested to the fullest extent. Then, some are even slaughtered. Peter stops time to prevent being shot and travels to present day to shoot his brother, Nathan, in order to thwart the future he lives in. Skeptically, Nathan dies. However, a few moments later, he is magically cured. Upon his rebirth he heads to the hospital chapel, where he thanks God. “We could be angels,” he subtly says of people with abilities. “We’re all here to do God’s bidding.”

Emmy Awards recap

Emmy celebrated its 60th birthday last night at the new NOKIA Theatre in Los Angeles. One major modification was made this year: As opposed to having one host, there were five. Each of the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program nominees, which consisted of Jeff Probst, Heidi Klum, Tom Bergeron, Howie Mandel and Ryan Seacrest, hosted in unison. Oprah Winfrey came out on stage first, commencing the awards ceremony. Once the five hosts emerged, they informed audience members and viewers that they, literally, had no speech prepared. Howie Mandel said, “We’re five reality hosts, and we don’t even have a contestant,” on just how ill-equipped they were. Truthfully, the act was probably supposed to be cute, but came off as unprofessional. Unfortunately, the hosting abilities did not improve at all during the nights’ events. The five hosts tried to be comedic and charming, but they always dropped the ball.

Gina Ascola (’09)/Eastside Staff September 19, 2008
Season four of Bones has started with FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth and his partner, world-renowned forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, going to London to assist the local law enforcement with the corpse of an American woman found in British waters. Meanwhile, Brennan’s team back at the Jeffersonian Institute is busy trying to find a new grad student capable of becoming Brennan’s new assistant, which means that a different grad student will be featured in each episode until a permanent replacement is found. Also, the engagement between forensic artist Angela Montenegro and Dr. Jack Hodgins has been called off after a visit from Angela’s ex-husband, Grayson.

Fringe – “The Same Old Story”

September 16th, 9:00pm on FOX  Synopsis: The investigation into fringe science continues as Agent Dunham (Anna Torv) teams up with Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Walter Bishop (John Noble) to investigate...

House “Dying Changes Everything”

Rating: B+ The Doctor is in, and more callous than ever as House returned last night for its fifth season. Despite being a new season, classic House showed his true colors within the first few minutes. The sarcastic and selfish doctor was seen sitting in the room of an elderly man who faithful viewers know is in a coma. House borrowed a video game from the pediatric department to play in said room while using the convenient unconscious man’s hand as a cup holder for his jumbo cup of soda.

Preview for fall TV, making comeback since writers’ strike

The TV season is finally upon us, and now we can expect full seasons of our favorite shows. Following the prolonged Writer’s Strike, viewers were left with minimal exposure to their favorite shows. Unfortunately, we are still feeling the effects of the strike to this day. With no writers allowed to start any new material, there is a small number of pilots previewing compared to what regular seasons have. Even so, shows that never got a chance to prove themselves (ratings-wise) last year, such as Pushing Daises and Private Practice, will be given another chance. Even with the reduced number of pilots there are still some interesting new shows debuting. To help you decide what to watch on TV this coming fall, Eastside’s Entertainment Editors Caroline Babula (’09) and Zack Rosenblatt (’09) have provided their choices for the top returning shows, and what they will be watching out of the new shows premiering.
